BNL Week 6 Recap: Mountaineers Recover, Suns Dominate, Zebras Split Results

Week 6 of the Basketball National League delivered another thrilling weekend of competition at the Mandeville Indoor Centre. With playoff aspirations heating up, each possession mattered as teams battled for positioning. The weekend showcased Tshwane Suns’ commanding presence, the Mountaineers’ resilience, and a tale of two halves for the Northern Cape Zebras in the women’s division.

Suns Surge Past Mountaineers with Statement Victory

Tshwane Suns 81 – 59 Western Cape Mountaineers

Tshwane Suns set the tone early with a dominant performance against the Western Cape Mountaineers, asserting control from start to finish. Marcus Mokwena led the charge with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Ian Limbe anchored both ends of the floor, adding 16 points, five assists, and six steals in an efficient outing.

The Suns overwhelmed the Mountaineers in the paint with 50 points and capitalized on turnovers to produce 21 points. Defensively, the Suns maintained pressure throughout, forcing 19 Mountaineers turnovers. By halftime, they had already begun to pull away, and their consistent scoring flow in the third quarter sealed the result. The Mountaineers, plagued by poor shooting percentages (30% FG, 15% from three), struggled to generate offensive rhythm despite 17 points from Michael Masoko.

Mountaineers Respond with Conviction on Day Two

Western Cape Mountaineers 74 – 59 Limpopo Pride

In a turnaround performance on Sunday, the Mountaineers reestablished their form against Limpopo Pride. The game was decided in the second quarter, where the Mountaineers outscored Pride 23–9, swinging momentum firmly in their favour.

Sun Kalaya delivered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, providing much-needed interior presence, while Masoko again played a central role with 17 points. The team showed more composure, converting 47.5% of their two-point attempts and pushing the tempo effectively with 21 fast break points.

Limpopo Pride started with early energy, holding an 11-point lead, but their offense cooled significantly as the Mountaineers imposed their will on both ends. Hlamalani Bosega and Ernest Masimini contributed 13 points each for Pride, but inconsistent shooting and lapses in defensive transition allowed the Mountaineers to build and maintain a comfortable lead.

Zebras Women Dominate Marlins in Defensive Masterclass

Northern Cape Zebras 59 – 35 Kwa-Zulu Marlins

The Northern Cape Zebras produced one of the most complete defensive performances of the weekend, blanking the Marlins 16–0 in the final quarter to close out a decisive win. The Zebras locked in defensively and executed offensively, led by Katlego Nyano and Mamotsoari Mofokeng who combined for 45 points. Hope Mbele dominated the boards with 20 rebounds, enabling the Zebras to control pace and territory.

The Zebras forced 27 turnovers and restricted the Marlins to just 22.2% shooting from the field. Their fast break game and ability to convert second-chance points were central to a performance that reaffirmed their playoff potential.

Mountaineers Women Bounce Back to Outpace the Zebras

Western Cape Mountaineers 79 – 62 Northern Cape Zebras

On Sunday, the Mountaineers Women responded to their recent struggles with a high-energy, balanced performance against the Zebras. The game featured standout play from Talita Memani, who scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while the bench added 35 points to fuel a consistent scoring output.

Despite another productive effort from Mofokeng (24 points) and Nyano (20 points), the Zebras’ reliance on their starting five began to show as the Mountaineers wore them down through rebounding dominance (74 total rebounds) and depth scoring. A decisive 23–11 fourth quarter solidified the Mountaineers’ win, keeping them firmly in playoff contention.
